Frances McDormand deservedly won an Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of mother, Mildred Hayes in this darkly comic drama written and directed by McDonagh. Mildred personally challenges the local authorities by renting three dilapidated billboards, seeking justice and calling attention to her daughter's unsolved murder. The billboards cause quite a stir among the Ebbing community and attract the attention of the local TV news station. Each of the three signs contain a controversial message directed towards the town's revered chief of police played by Woody Harrelson. Two exceptionally raw lead performances from McDormand and Harrelson make this a ’must see’ film.
