Xavier Beauvois / France, Switzerland, Monaco, Belgium 2017 / 135 mins / Cert 15 / Subtitles
Set in rural France between 1915 and 1920, the film has been described as a ‘counter narrative’ to films about the brutality of war on the battlefield. At the heart is matriarch Hortense working with her daughter to keep the family farm going, later taking on another female worker who becomes part of the family. The film unfolds at a languorous pace, mirroring the beauty of the landscape and has been described by Ann Hornaday (Washington Post) as a “rich simmering cassoulet of a film”. It can also be viewed as a tribute to the women who stayed behind and their fortitude in preserving a home for their men to return to.
