Debra Granik’s film is about a father and daughter who choose to drop out of society. Military veteran Will (Ben Foster), who is suffering PTSD, provides for his daughter Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie) as she grows up, as best he can. But society has rules and regulations that frequently clash with their desire to live off their own wits in the backwoods. The film dutifully paints a canvas where we decide if Will’s course is the right one.
